McDonald Brothers, Inc.
was founded in the fall of 1885 by brothers Moses and Daniel McDonald in
West End, NC. Angus McDonald is the
grandson of Moses McDonald.
Moses and his family operated the business throughout
the depression and into the World War II era. Moses died at age 80 in June
of 1943. His son M.C. operated the business until his other son Allan,
Angus's father, returned from France during World War II. M.C. and Allan
ran the business together until M.C. died in 1955. At that point Allan and
M.C.'s wife, Lillian, operated the business along with Lillian's son Chris
until 1974 when Allan and his son Angus took over full operation of the
company until Allan's death in 1992. The business is currently operated by
Angus with the support of his wife Carol, their children Logan and
Charlotte, and along with Angus's mother Virginia Cary, as well as a great
group of loyal employees.
McDonald Brothers was opened in West End, NC as a
general store and included building materials until 1966. All sorts of
things from handkerchiefs to naval stores, farm items and school buses
were sold during this period. The buildings in West End are still used for
storage today.
In 1955 Allan opened a store at a tobacco warehouse in
Carthage, NC. Soon afterward they moved to the old Tyson and Jones
buildings near the First Presbyterian Church in Carthage where they
operated there until closing in 1974. These buildings were burned by arson
in 1975.
In 1965 a store was opened in downtown Southern
Pines, NC and then was moved to the present McDonald Brothers location on
US-I in 1966. The business had major expansions in 1974, 1976, 1983, 1988,
1996 and 1997. Though a major fire in the fall of 1987 caused considerable
damage, the business made deliveries to its customers the following day.
This quick recovery would not have occurred without the help of our great
employees and suppliers as well as the efficiency of the Moore County fire
departments. The clean up was done quickly and the new buildings were up
and in use after only a few months.
McDonald Brothers acquired the Laurinburg and
Rockingham operations of Sinclair Lumber Company in 1993 and opened a
store in Laurinburg, NC. Many of the great employees that started that
first day are still a part of our growth in that area today.
Also in 1993 McDonald Brothers purchased Manns
Hardware in Sanford, NC. It began operations there as Service Hardware and
Home Center. A new building was constructed in 1994 with a major expansion
in early 1996 which added a lumber yard and warehouse. The McDonald
Brothers name was added that spring to that location. With a combined
effort of the Sanford employees and the Southern Pines employees the
transition from a hardware only supplier to a complete builders supplier
has been a successful one.
In the fall of 1996 McDonald
Brothers opened a Rental Center at its Southern Pines location.
The addition of this operation has been a great way to continue
our purpose of being a great supplier to the folks who build
in our area. Service is number one by this addition as well
as at all our other locations. In the spring of 1999 McDonald
Brothers opened a Rental Center in our Sanford Location.
A new window and millwork store, Legacy
Millwork Specialties, was designed and placed into operation in
November, 1999 in Durham, N.C.
Additional expansions by several departments and
divisions will continue during 2001-2002 thanks to the effort of you, our
greatest asset.
